We'd love to call it journalism, but that's a tad demeaning to all the real journos we know out there.
John's had a few things published, some in the most unlikely places, sometimes under pseudonyms. He once became Candida Pinion, a feisty 22-year old Yale graduate in British Politics who shared with readers of Government Computing her outspoken e-mail correspondence with the Chief Executive of Barsetshire CC.
Most of our assignments are more run-of-the-mill. We're happy to consider work from publishing and PR companies, especially where a local (ie Northamptonshire) flavour is required. Our last project was a 'Living in Your Area' supplement for Yellow Pages. Well, at least we can boast of putting our words into every household in the County. Anyway, you can find us at www.elance.com if you want to offer work that way.
We've done a bit of this but, in all honesty, you need to do it fulltime to be any good at it. Techniques are changing all the time, so it's hard for partimers to keep abreast of things. Best not to ask this of us these days, though we can probably locate some good designers to take on the work.
John always wanted to own a shop. In one way, he has been part owner of Daily Bread Co-operative, a unique wholefoods business in Northampton. John was once a full-time member but now helps out there 3 days a week. This provides the sort of face-to-face human contact that gives retail its distinctive charm. But we quickly saw the potential to use the internet to reach out to customers well beyond our own locality. So we've now dabbled in running several virtual shops. These initially were set up in association with Daily Bread, selling herbal remedies and supplements (Think Herbal), and ethnic music CDs (Putumayo World Music). We've now more or less dropped these in order to focus on one dedicated e-shop: Partworks selling back issues of Marshall Cavendish, Orbis, de Agostini, Fabbri, Purnell and other partwork publications. This is a niche market which we've now made our own. Even the publishers come to us for back numbers. All this e-commerce stuff has given us some special insight into the sorts of issues facing entrepreneurs who want to use the web for more than simple sales brochuring.
